Dr. Anil Menon, addresses students of TAPMI on “Transforming Nation with Passion”
Dr. Anil Menon, President of Globalization and Smart+Connected Communities, Cisco Systems Inc. delivered 10th leadership lecture on “Transforming Nations with Passion” at TAPMI. Dr. Menon began his speech by giving insights on some of the aspects that differentiates a developed country from a developing country. Healthcare, education, sports, entertainment are some of the industries in which we can observe major differences. Lack of institutions, structure, business enterprises, and technology in the developing countries are some of the reasons that contribute to these differences, he observed.
Dr. Menon went on to say that the job of business leaders is to fix these differences by exploring the huge opportunities that exist today for creating new industries within the country and around the world. He says developing countries need new cities which can be built by taking urban services to rural areas. Emphasizing the role of technology in the form of internet and cloud services, Dr. Menon said ‘The internet is expanding from an information superhighway to a platform that is transforming the world’. By Leveraging technology, transformative business models in the field of Healthcare and Education can be built. ‘Telepresence’ is one such technology used by Cisco. He shared the statistics of the cost of computing, storage and bandwidth from the year 1992 to 2008 and showed how it has come down drastically. He also said that mobile internet is pervasive and that internet will be all around us. He said that videos will play a major role in information flow in the future.
Cisco initiated home project called Samudayain, uses technology for building a Healthcare center in which patients are seen via telemedicine. Technology is also used in schools in the form of remote classroom sessions. By comparing the investments made in the R&D of various industries, he says the only way to transform industry is by having a visionary leadership, smart regulations, public-private partnerships and new innovation ecosystems. He concluded his speech by saying that these transformations cannot be achieved without passion.
The lecture concluded on an enriching note as students exchanged their ideas with Dr. Menon. Earlier, Dr RC Natarajan, Director TAPMI welcomed the gathering while Dr HS Ballal, Pro-Chancellor of Manipal University presided over the function.
